In December 2024, Toyo Keizai Online reported that animation studio CygamesPictures had begun work on an anime adaptation of the manga Kagurabachi. Since that first report, several industry insiders have backed the claim, saying the project is indeed moving forward. More recently, another unofficial source suggested that the series is targeting a 2027 premiere. That timeline hasn’t been confirmed yet, but excitement around the possible adaptation keeps growing.
Kagurabachi is a dark fantasy manga by Takeru Hokazono, serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump since September 2023. It’s drawn international attention for its detailed world, striking art, and more mature approach to storytelling. With ten volumes published and over three million copies sold worldwide, it has quickly become one of the standout new titles in modern shonen manga.
The story centers on Chihiro, the son of a master swordsmith who created six enchanted blades. Trained to wield and forge these powerful weapons, Chihiro’s quiet life is destroyed when a band of sorcerers attacks, kills his father, and steals the swords. Consumed by revenge, he takes up the seventh and final enchanted blade and begins a dangerous quest to hunt the sorcerers, reclaim the stolen weapons, and uncover the grim secrets tied to them.
The growing interest in anime versions of new manga like Kagurabachi shows how strong the global appetite is for Japanese fantasy stories. If the 2027 release window turns out to be accurate, the anime could debut just as the manga reaches a major turning point—giving longtime readers and new fans alike a chance to experience its blend of tension, artistry, and emotion on screen.
At the same time, creator Hiro Mashima is also set to launch a new manga in the Fairy Tail universe later this summer, giving fans even more fantasy adventures to look forward to.
