After a long hiatus, the fantasy anime Black Clover is returning for a second season. New episodes will begin airing on October 3, bringing the lengthy wait to an end. The anime’s creators confirmed the premiere date while sharing new information about the upcoming production.
The series follows Asta, a boy born without magical powers in a world where magic influences almost every part of daily life. Even so, he refuses to give up on his goal of becoming the Wizard King. Instead, he depends on relentless physical training, sheer determination, and a rare grimoire that gives him anti-magic abilities. Along the way, he fights beside Yuno, his talented childhood friend and rival, while both young men pursue the kingdom’s most prestigious magical title.
Black Clover is adapted from the manga by Yuki Tabata. It was originally serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump before moving to Shonen Jump GIGA for its final chapters. The manga ended in May and was collected across 38 volumes. That leaves the anime with plenty of material to cover as Asta’s journey approaches some of its most important and intense conflicts.
The first anime series debuted in October 2017 and aired 170 episodes before concluding in March 2021. Over the course of that run, fans saw Asta join the notoriously chaotic Black Bulls, defend the Clover Kingdom from increasingly dangerous enemies, and learn more about devils, forbidden magic, and the source of his unusual powers.
After the television series ended, the story continued on screen with the feature-length anime film Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King. The movie did not directly adapt an arc from the manga. Instead, it told an original story centered on former Wizard Kings and a serious threat to the kingdom. It gave fans something new to watch while the television anime remained on hiatus.
Studio Pierrot, which animated the original series and the movie, will return for the second season. The studio has plenty of experience with long-running action anime, and having the same team involved should help preserve the familiar character designs, overall visual style, and rapid magical battles that fans associate with Black Clover.
The new season is expected to pick up the main conflict involving Asta, the Magic Knights, and the increasingly dangerous supernatural forces surrounding the Clover Kingdom. Anyone who has not watched the series in a while may want to revisit the closing episodes of the original run, especially the events involving the Spade Kingdom, the devils, and Asta’s evolving partnership with Liebe.
The announcement did not confirm a full episode count, so it is still unknown whether the anime will return to its previous weekly format or adopt a shorter seasonal schedule. Details about international streaming services and regional broadcast dates have also not been announced, but more information will likely be shared as the October 3 premiere gets closer.
