'Fairy Tail' Anniversary Manga to End With Next Chapter

Weekly Shonen Magazine has confirmed when Fairy Tail Re:Fantasia, the short manga series set in the world of Fairy Tail, will end. Creator Hiro Mashima will publish the final chapter in the magazine's 44th issue, which is scheduled for release on September 30.

The anniversary miniseries brings Natsu Dragneel and his friends from the Fairy Tail guild together for another adventure. Mashima created it to mark the original manga's 20th anniversary, giving longtime readers another chance to spend time with some of the series' most familiar and popular characters.

While Re:Fantasia is a fairly short project, Hiro Mashima's involvement as both its writer and artist makes it an important addition to the franchise. The manga was designed as a special anniversary story rather than a full sequel, offering readers a more focused adventure filled with the humor, magic, action, and close friendships associated with Fairy Tail.

The original Fairy Tail manga began serialization in 2006 and ended in 2017, completing an 11-year run. Its chapters were collected across 63 volumes, and the series has more than 72 million copies in circulation worldwide. That success made it one of the most widely recognized fantasy action manga of its generation.

The story follows the Fairy Tail guild, a famously unruly group of powerful wizards who accept dangerous jobs and often leave nearly as much destruction behind as the enemies they face. Natsu, a fire-wielding Dragon Slayer searching for the dragon Igneel, takes part in many of the guild's biggest adventures. He is joined by Lucy Heartfilia, Happy, Gray Fullbuster, Erza Scarlet, Wendy Marvell, and many other characters who have become fan favorites.

Over time, the manga expanded into a much larger franchise that includes spin-off titles, multiple anime productions, feature films, novels, merchandise, and video games. Its mix of magical battles, comedy, emotional stories, and strong themes of friendship and loyalty helped it build an international following that has remained active well beyond the end of the original manga.

The story has also continued in Fairy Tail: 100 Years Quest, a direct sequel that began publication in July 2018. It follows Natsu and his team as they take on the legendary 100 Years Quest, a mission so difficult that no wizard has been able to finish it in a century. The sequel later received an anime adaptation of its own, bringing this next part of the guild's story to an even broader audience.

As Fairy Tail Re:Fantasia comes to a close, the miniseries serves as a concise but meaningful celebration of Mashima's fantasy world and its 20-year history. Fans who want more adventures with Natsu and the guild can continue with 100 Years Quest. Newcomers, meanwhile, can start with the original 63-volume manga or watch its anime adaptation.
