Doppelgängers, Murders and a Mysterious Island: 'Summer Time Rendering' Gets a Live-Action Film After the Anime

A live-action film based on Yasuki Tanaka's manga Summer Time Rendering is set to open in theaters in 2027. The adaptation was first announced in 2021, though a planned release year was not confirmed until recently.

Ken Ninomiya is attached to direct the film. Other details, such as the cast, screenwriter, production companies, filming schedule, and plans for an international release, remain under wraps. More information will likely be shared once the project gets closer to production.

The supernatural mystery centers on Shinpei Ajiro, a young man who returns to his remote island home after hearing that his childhood friend, Ushio Kofune, has died. Her death is first treated as a tragic accident, but troubling evidence soon raises the possibility that she was murdered. While looking into what happened, Shinpei hears unsettling stories about people who come face-to-face with identical copies of themselves, only to die shortly afterward.

The story blends murder mystery, psychological horror, science fiction, time loops, and local folklore. What begins as an investigation slowly becomes a desperate fight for survival as Shinpei tries to uncover the truth about the island's mysterious doubles. With its complicated timeline and steadily growing supernatural conflict, the manga may be difficult to translate into a live-action feature. At the same time, those elements could make the film especially compelling if handled well.

Tanaka's original manga ran on Shueisha's Shonen Jump+ platform from 2017 until 2021. The finished series was collected in 13 volumes, giving readers a complete, self-contained story with a clear and definitive ending.

The manga was previously adapted into a 25-episode anime series produced by OLM. It aired from April to September 2022 and covered the entire story. The new film will mark the first live-action screen adaptation of Summer Time Rendering, bringing a different take on the series' isolated island setting, suspenseful mystery, and supernatural lore.
