New Anime Series Based on 'Naruto' Manga in the Works

The already enormous Naruto franchise is getting even bigger with a new limited anime series. Reports say the project will consist of a small number of episodes, though details about the story, creative team, release schedule, and streaming availability have not been shared yet.

Fans can expect to learn more on October 10 during the NARUTO: What's Next? panel at New York Comic Con. Viz Media announced the news and confirmed that a new animated Naruto feature film will also be revealed during the event.

For now, it is unclear whether the limited series will adapt material from Masashi Kishimoto's original manga, revisit a previously unexplored period in Naruto Uzumaki's life, or tell an entirely original story. A shorter format could give the production team room to tell a focused, self-contained story while maintaining more consistent animation than a long-running weekly series typically allows.

Masashi Kishimoto created the original Naruto manga, which ran from 1999 to 2014 and was collected in 72 volumes. It went on to become the foundation of a global entertainment franchise that includes several anime productions, theatrical films, video games, novels, stage adaptations, merchandise, and collaborations around the world.

With more than 250 million manga copies in circulation worldwide, Naruto remains one of the best-selling manga series ever published. Its lasting appeal comes from its inventive ninja battles, unforgettable rivalries, and emotionally layered characters. The story also deals with themes that continue to connect with readers and viewers, including perseverance, loneliness, friendship, and the cycle of conflict.

At the center of the story is Naruto Uzumaki, an orphan raised in the Hidden Leaf Village. Many villagers avoid or resent him because the powerful Nine-Tailed Fox is sealed inside his body. Naruto dreams of becoming Hokage, the leader and protector of the village, initially because he wants the recognition he has never received. Over time, that goal grows into something much bigger as he fights to protect his friends and help create a more peaceful world.

The manga previously inspired two major television anime series, Naruto and Naruto: Shippuden. Together, the shows follow Naruto from his early years as a loud, unpredictable academy student to his role in increasingly dangerous missions, large-scale wars, and decisive battles that shape the future of the entire ninja world.

The franchise has also released 11 animated feature films. The newly announced movie is expected to add to that long cinematic history, although its title, plot, director, and release date have not been confirmed. Studio Pierrot, which produced the main Naruto television adaptations, is widely expected to have a role in the project, but no official details about its involvement have been provided.

The original story was later followed by Boruto: Naruto Next Generations, which turns its attention to Naruto's son, Boruto Uzumaki, and a new generation of ninja from the Hidden Leaf Village. The sequel looks at how the shinobi world has changed during a period of relative peace, as rapid technological progress and new dangers linked to the Otsutsuki clan begin to reshape life in the villages.

The manga's current storyline continues under the title Boruto: Two Blue Vortex. Taking place after a major time skip, the series follows older versions of Boruto, Sarada Uchiha, Mitsuki, and several other returning characters. They must deal with the consequences of the earlier story while confronting a new group of enemies who pose an increasingly serious threat.

There is also a Boruto television anime, though it is currently on hiatus. Its first part ended in 2023, and a second part has been announced without a confirmed premiere date. Fans are still waiting to find out whether the anime will return to cover the remaining material from before the time skip or move more quickly toward the storyline featured in Two Blue Vortex.

Four special Naruto episodes were previously announced as part of the television anime's 20th anniversary celebration. Their broadcast was later postponed indefinitely so the production team could spend more time improving their quality. A new release date has not been announced, and it is still unclear whether the anniversary specials have any connection to the newly revealed limited series.

A live-action Hollywood adaptation is moving ahead as well, with production currently expected to begin in 2027. The movie will be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, whose credits include Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Charles Melton is currently the only reported member of the cast. He is expected to play Kakashi Hatake, the masked elite ninja who leads Team 7 and serves as a mentor to Naruto, Sasuke Uchiha, and Sakura Haruno. The rest of the cast has not been revealed, and further production details are still being kept under wraps.

Between the limited anime series, a new animated film, the delayed anniversary episodes, the ongoing Boruto manga, and the live-action adaptation, Naruto is heading into one of its busiest periods in years. The New York Comic Con panel should provide a clearer picture of how these projects relate to one another and, perhaps most importantly, which one fans will get to watch first.
