Aito Aoyagi's mystery novels, which follow Little Red Riding Hood as she investigates a series of unusual crimes, are getting another screen adaptation. After previously inspiring a live-action film, the books will return as an anime titled Little Red Riding Hood: A Detective Story (Akazukin, Tabi no Tochu de Shitai to Deau). The announcement came with the show's first teaser trailer, giving viewers an early look at its darker take on the familiar fairy-tale world.
The anime is set to premiere in 2027, with Benten Film handling production. Most of the staff and supporting cast have not been announced yet, but Yume Miyamoto has been confirmed as the voice of Little Red Riding Hood.
Miyamoto is known for voicing Mei Kamino in Godzilla Singular Point, Yoko Imari in Ruri Rocks, and Himari Azuma in Chained Soldier. She has plenty of experience playing smart, determined characters, which should suit this version of Little Red Riding Hood, a sharp and endlessly curious investigator who is quick to question anything that does not add up.
The original novels turn well-known European fairy tales into detailed murder mysteries. Rather than simply making her way through enchanted forests and crossing paths with legendary characters, Little Red Riding Hood repeatedly finds herself dealing with suspicious deaths, secret motives, and carefully planned crimes. To uncover the truth, she studies the evidence, questions witnesses, and looks for inconsistencies before continuing on her journey.
A girl known as Little Red Riding Hood lived on the outskirts of a town. One day, she began a journey with a specific goal in mind, only to find that trouble followed her almost everywhere she went. With a sharp mind and a strong sense of curiosity, she started solving each mystery she came across. The blunt question she asks every culprit captures her personality perfectly: "Why is your criminal plan so careless?" It may be set in a fairy-tale world that nearly everyone recognizes, but this familiar story is about to become much darker and far more mysterious.
The series brings classic fantasy settings and characters into the framework of a detective story. Familiar fairy-tale figures may look much as viewers remember them, but their parts in the story are changed by hidden grudges, personal rivalries, and criminal acts. Much of the fun comes from watching Little Red Riding Hood use reason and careful observation to explain magical-looking events instead of simply accepting them as normal parts of an enchanted world.
The anime should be worth watching for fans of mysteries, unusual fairy-tale retellings, and stories centered on perceptive protagonists. It is currently scheduled for 2027, with more information about the exact premiere date, production staff, episode count, international streaming options, and additional cast members likely to arrive as the release gets closer.
