Two new anime projects based on The Quintessential Quintuplets (Gotōbun no Hanayome) are officially in the works. The news was revealed in early May during a special event. One project is an original video animation (OVA), and the other is a new TV series. The OVA will cover manga chapters that haven’t been adapted before, while the television series will draw from the light novel collection Gotōbun no Hanayome: Shunkashūtō, which continues the story after the manga ends.
The original manga ran from 2017 to 2020 in Weekly Shonen Magazine, published by Kodansha, and was later compiled into 14 volumes. It reached more than 20 million copies in circulation, making it one of the most popular romantic comedies of the past decade. Its creator, Negi Haruba, is often praised for his balance of heartfelt storytelling, humor, and genuine character moments.
The series has already spawned two TV seasons, a feature film, and several specials such as The Quintessential Quintuplets: Addendum and The Quintessential Quintuplets: Honeymoon. Each adaptation has added new emotional layers to the story, giving fans a closer look at the Nakano sisters and how their personalities and relationships evolve over time.
The story centers on Futaro Uesugi, a smart but financially struggling high school student who takes on a tutoring job that he hopes will change his circumstances. What seems like a straightforward gig quickly turns complicated when he discovers his students are identical quintuplet sisters—each with her own quirks, strong will, and total lack of motivation to study. Earning their trust takes patience and persistence, but as they spend more time together, close bonds begin to form. Eventually, one sister wins his heart, and that love story has kept fans speculating and discussing for years.
With new material on the horizon, anticipation is high to see what stories these new installments will tell. Whether they follow the sisters after graduation or revisit moments left out of the manga, both anime promise to bring back the humor, warmth, and relationships that made The Quintessential Quintuplets so beloved around the world.
