Makoto Yukimura Concludes 20-Year-Long 'Vinland Saga' Manga Journey

Yesterday, on July 25th, the final chapter of the manga Vinland Saga was published in a new issue of the Afternoon magazine. This marked the end of the tale with the 220th chapter serving as the conclusion to the story.

The creator of the Vinland Saga is Makoto Yukimura, known for his work on "Planeter". His series has been published in Kodansha's magazines since April 2005 and it is currently collected in 28 volumes. This year, the series celebrated its 20th anniversary.

In August 2022, the total circulation of the series surpassed 7 million copies. This is a testament to the popularity and wide-reaching impact of the series, and it continues to attract new readers even now.

Two anime seasons of Vinland Saga have been released. The first one was produced by Wit Studio, while the second one was handled by MAPPA. The first season aired in 2019, followed by the second season in 2023. Each season consists of 24 episodes, providing a comprehensive adaptation of the manga's story.

The story of the Vinland Saga is set in the year 1013. It revolves around an Icelandic youth named Thorfinn, who is the son of one of the greatest Viking warriors. When his father is slain in battle by Askeladd, the leader of a Viking band, Thorfinn embarks on a path of vengeance. Proud and unwilling to engage in dishonorable combat, Thorfinn joins Askeladd's band with the intention of defeating him in a duel. However, he inevitably gets swept up in the tumultuous and bloody events of the era, with the crown of England at stake.

This epic tale combines elements of history, adventure, and drama, delivering a rich narrative experience. The characters are well-developed, with complex motivations and relationships that contribute to the overall depth of the story. Vinland Saga is not just about battles and power struggles, but also explores themes like honor, revenge, and the human cost of war.

With its blend of historical realism and dramatic storytelling, Vinland Saga offers a unique take on the Viking era. It provides a fascinating glimpse into a time of great change and upheaval, making it a must-read for fans of historical fiction and manga alike.
