The anime sequel "Kaiju No. 8" has once again sparked interest with the release of a new trailer. The third trailer of the show's second season has emerged online, showcasing humanity's struggle against monstrous creatures. The trailer also introduces a snippet of the new season's ending theme and serves as a reminder of the premiere date for the sequel. The closing musical theme for the season is the song Beautiful Colors performed by the internationally recognized band, OneRepublic. The airing of the new episodes will commence on July 19.
The anime, "Kaiju No. 8", is a product of the well-known animation studio Production I.G. Last year, the studio released the first season of the series, and this year, it followed up with a compilation movie and an original episode titled "Hoshina's Day Off".
Monsters, known as "kaiju", began appearing in Japan years ago. To combat these threats, an elite military unit called the "Defense Corps" was created. Its members risk their lives daily to protect civilians. Once a monster is killed, "cleaners" step in to dispose of the remains. Kafka Hibino, a 32-year-old cleaner, is dissatisfied with his job. Hibino aspired to join the "Defense Corps" and earn a living by protecting people from kaiju, but after several unsuccessful attempts, he gave up on his dream. However, when the ambitious Reno Ichikawa joins his cleaning crew, Kafka is reminded of his dream. After a series of events, Kafka is attacked by a parasitic kaiju, transforming him into a humanoid monster ("Kaiju No. 8"). With his newfound abilities, Kafka attempts to fulfill his lifelong dream one last time.
Based on a manga by Naoya Matsumoto, the anime has its roots in the Shonen Jump+ app and website, where the original manga has been available since July 3, 2020. The manga has so far been compiled into 15 volumes, with a total circulation exceeding 18 million copies. The series will come to an end shortly before the premiere of the second season.
Aside from the anime adaptations, "Kaiju No. 8" also boasts spin-offs, including a light novel and two manga series. Additionally, a video game based on the series is currently in development.
