The long-awaited second season of the anime adaptation of Dorohedoro finally has an official release date. According to the recent announcement, new episodes will begin streaming worldwide on various platforms starting April 1 - exactly six years after the first season’s debut.
The new season is once again being produced by the acclaimed studio MAPPA, with Yuichiro Hayashi returning as director. The original season aired in 2020 and featured 12 episodes that introduced audiences to the bizarre and gritty world of Hole. Following that, fans were treated to a special OVA series consisting of six short episodes that expanded on side characters and untold stories from the darkly humorous universe of Dorohedoro.
The manga that inspired the series was created by Q Hayashida, known for her distinctive art style and twisted storytelling. Published by Shogakukan between 2000 and 2018, the complete story spans 23 volumes and remains one of the most original works in the dark fantasy genre. Her creation skillfully combines horror, absurdist comedy, and dystopian mystery, creating a world both grotesque and strangely captivating.
Set in the decaying city known as Hole, Dorohedoro follows a man named Caiman, who suffers from a horrific curse that has transformed his head into that of a lizard. With no memory of who he was or how he ended up this way, Caiman hunts down the magic users responsible. Each encounter brings him a step closer to uncovering the sorcerer who cursed him - and hopefully, the truth hidden deep in his past. The series balances savage action with moments of bizarre humor and striking emotional depth, making it a must-watch for fans of unconventional storytelling.
MAPPA has rapidly become one of Japan’s most respected animation studios, producing hits such as Attack on Titan: The Final Season and Chainsaw Man.
