The second season of The Fable officially has a premiere date. According to an announcement on the anime's website, the comedy thriller will return on January 9, 2027.
The anime is produced by Tezuka Productions and adapted from the acclaimed manga by Katsuhisa Minami. The original manga ran in Kodansha's Weekly Young Magazine from 2014 to 2019, with its chapters later collected into 22 volumes.
Its popularity also led to two sequel manga series. The Fable: The Second Contact picked up the story, while The Fable: The Third Secret began publication in March 2025. The first two series have more than 28 million copies in circulation, placing The Fable among the most successful modern crime manga franchises.
The anime's first season aired from April through September 2024 and ran for 25 episodes. That extended two-cour run gave the story room to balance organized crime drama, dry comedy, action, and quieter moments from everyday life. Season 2 is expected to continue Akira Sato's efforts to keep a low profile, even as his reputation and criminal past keep finding ways to disrupt his new life.
The Fable centers on Akira Sato, a legendary professional assassin whose name is feared throughout the criminal underworld. After years of carrying out assignments that few others could survive, Akira receives an unexpected order from his boss. He must live as an ordinary civilian for an entire year without killing anyone or drawing unnecessary attention to himself.
Akira takes on a new identity and does his best to settle into normal life, but the assignment turns out to be more difficult than any hit. He knows weapons, surveillance, and combat inside out, yet ordinary conversations, friendships, and workplace etiquette often leave him at a loss. To make matters worse, the dangerous people around him have little interest in honoring his temporary retirement.
What makes the story different is that Akira does not need to become stronger. He is already far more capable than almost everyone he encounters. His real challenge is knowing when to hold back, even when violence would be the quickest and simplest answer. That setup lets the series move comfortably between tense confrontations and awkward, deadpan comedy.
Alongside the television anime, The Fable has also been adapted into two live-action films. The movies introduced the franchise to a broader audience and showed that its particular blend of crime, action, and understated humor can work just as well in a different format.
More details about the second season should be announced as the January 2027 premiere approaches. These are expected to include the episode count, returning cast members, theme songs, and information about international streaming availability.
