Fantasy Anime 'Ascendance of a Bookworm' Gets Fifth Season From 'Attack on Titan' Studio

The fourth season of Ascendance of a Bookworm may be over, but Myne's story still has a long way to go. The anime was quickly renewed for a fifth season. The initial announcement was light on specifics, however, with no confirmed release date, cast list, or episode count.

Wit Studio will remain in charge of production. The studio is best known for producing the first three seasons of Attack on Titan, along with several other anime praised for their strong visuals and polished animation. For the fifth season of Ascendance of a Bookworm, the team will begin adapting Part 4 of the original light novel series.

Ajia-do Animation Works handled the anime before Wit Studio took over, producing the first three seasons and a two-part OVA. Season 1 ran for 14 episodes, Season 2 had 12, and Season 3 had 10. Wit Studio then produced a considerably longer fourth season with 24 episodes. That larger episode count gave the adaptation more time to develop its growing cast, political struggles, and increasingly detailed fantasy world.

The story begins with Urano Motosu, a devoted reader who wants nothing more than to spend her life surrounded by books. Just when she learns that she will finally have the chance to work as a librarian, she dies in a sudden accident. She later wakes up to find that she has been reincarnated in a completely different world.

Urano is reborn as Myne, the frail young daughter of a poor soldier in the city of Ehrenfest. The society she enters is built around a strict class system, where wealth, magical ability, and noble birth shape nearly every opportunity a person receives. Commoners have little say in how the city is run, while influential nobles control politics, education, and access to many of its most valuable resources.

At first, Myne is not especially focused on the unfairness of this social system. She has a much more immediate concern: where are all the books? To her dismay, she discovers that very few people can read and that practical printing technology has yet to be developed. Every book has to be copied by hand, turning books into costly luxury items found mainly in noble households, temples, and the homes of wealthy merchants.

As the daughter of a soldier with very little money, Myne has almost no hope of owning a book herself. Even getting close to a place where books are stored is a challenge. On top of that, her new body is unusually fragile, and ordinary chores can leave her exhausted or dangerously ill. None of this weakens her love of reading, though, or her determination to hold a book again.

Eventually, Myne arrives at a simple conclusion that changes the course of her new life: if she cannot find books, she will make them herself. That choice sends her down a difficult and often unpredictable path involving papermaking, ink, writing tools, trade, craftsmanship, religion, magic, and the dangerous political world of Ehrenfest.

What starts as a warm, often funny story about a determined child trying to make paper slowly grows into a much broader fantasy drama. Myne's knowledge from her previous life draws the interest of merchants, priests, nobles, and anyone else who understands the financial and political value of her ideas. Each step she takes toward making books easier to produce also brings her further into institutions that were never meant to accept someone from her social background.

Ascendance of a Bookworm feels different from many reincarnation stories because its heroine does not return as an unbeatable fighter. Myne relies instead on her knowledge, patience, imagination, and talent for getting people to work together. Her progress is rarely quick or easy. Even an invention that seems basic requires the right materials, experienced workers, financial support, repeated testing, and plenty of cooperation.

The fifth season is expected to widen the story's scope as the anime moves into Part 4 of the light novels. This part gives more attention to noble society, formal education, magical customs, political relationships, and the responsibilities that come with Myne's growing status. Her desire to read is still at the heart of the series, but access to books now carries more duties, risks, and consequences than ever before.

A premiere date and full production schedule have not yet been confirmed. More details about the staff, returning voice actors, episode count, and broadcast plans will likely be shared as the new season gets closer to release.
