The Fable is returning as part of the winter 2027 anime season. The project's official website has confirmed that the dark crime thriller's second season will begin airing in January 2027. The exact premiere date, full broadcast schedule, and international streaming plans have not been announced yet, but those details are expected closer to the release.
The anime is produced by Tezuka Productions and adapts the manga by Katsuhisa Minami. The original series was published in Kodansha's Weekly Young Magazine from 2014 to 2019, with its chapters collected across 22 volumes. Its unusual blend of organized crime, dry humor, tense action, and everyday drama helped the series attract a large and dedicated following.
The story did not end with the original manga. Its first sequel, The Fable: The Second Contact, continues exploring the lives of its characters and the criminal world around them. A further installment, The Fable: The Third Secret, began publication in March 2025. The first two manga series now have more than 28 million copies in circulation, showing that readers have continued to support the franchise well beyond its original run.
The anime's first season aired from April to September 2024 and ran for 25 episodes. That two-cour season had enough room to properly introduce Akira Sato, settle him into his strange new way of life, and explore the uncomfortable balance between quiet domestic comedy and the constant threat of underworld violence.
Season 2 is expected to follow Akira as he continues trying to live a quiet, ordinary life, despite being surrounded by people and situations that make peace almost impossible. Much of the appeal of The Fable comes from that contrast. Akira is practically superhuman when it comes to combat, but ordinary conversations, steady employment, personal relationships, and the basic demands of civilian life often leave him completely out of his depth.
The franchise has also been adapted into two live-action films. Along with the manga and anime, the movies have introduced more viewers to the series and its distinctive mix of deadpan comedy, eccentric characters, and brutal crime drama.
